Siamo tutti DIVERSI

Abbiamo chiuso la mostra dopo una settimana intensa e ricca di piccole e grandi soddisfazioni. Nonostante un inizio un po’ bagnato, e vorrei citare la grinta e la bravura dei ragazzi di “Pomeridiamo” che si sono comunque impegnati nello spettacolo di apertura, abbiamo avuto almeno 140 ospiti per l’inaugurazione della mostra “Siamo tutti DIVERSI”. Abbiamo avuto tanti visitatori, venuti nei giorni successivi a curiosare alla Villa Rusconi di Rescalda. È stata un’esperienza appagante per noi avere la partecipazione di tanti ragazzi delle scuole media ed elementari, sia come modelli per le foto e l’espressione delle loro idee sulla disabilità, sia per la loro gestione della mostra quando noi non eravamo sul posto. Altra grande soddisfazione per noi è stata la partecipazione di diverse famiglie della neo-Associazione Amici Team Down, che non conoscevamo quando il progetto ha avuto inizio nel 2009. I bambini di queste famiglie hanno espresso il loro stile particolare con naturalezza nelle foto portando la mostra a un altro livello e siamo loro veramente riconoscenti.

Siamo stati contenti inoltre di avere potuto accogliere alla mostra numerose classi delle scuole elementari e medie che sono venuti per scoprire il messaggio sulla diversità. Inoltre, siamo rimasti molto colpiti dalla risposta di numerosi visitatori che non solo hanno apprezzato le bellissime foto scattate dal nostro amico il fotografo Enrico Mascheroni che hanno definito commoventi, grandissime, emozionanti, fantastiche, divertenti, ma hanno anche preso al cuore il messaggio della mostra dimostrando una sensibilità nel riflettere sui luoghi comuni che riguardano la disabilità e la sindrome di Down.

La mostra fotografica “Siamo tutti DIVERSI” mirata alla sensibilizzazione verso la disabilità, ha come tema un concetto che bisogna esaminare con occhi nuovi e senza pregiudizi. Siamo tutti diversi, e in questa affermazione devo vedere per prima me stessa. Il nostro scopo non era dimostrare che i nostri figli con la sindrome di Down sono uguali agli altri, e nemmeno dimostrare che riescono a fare le stesse cose. Abbiamo tutti delle capacità diverse. È molto più facile concludere che ogni individuo è fatto a modo suo, piuttosto che forzatamente affermare che è arrivato dallo stampo della normalità.

Spesso valutiamo il valore di una persona in base all’aspetto fisico e quando ci troviamo di fronte una persona con disabilità non riusciamo a vedere altro che la disabilità. Invece la disabilità è solo una piccola parte della persona. Bisogna vedere la persona!

The photo exhibition was taken down after a very intense week that brought great satisfaction. In spite of a fairly rainy beginning -- and I would like to praise the courage and endurance of the kids from the afterschool program who put on the opening show all the same -- there were at least 140 guests for the inauguration of “Siamo tutti DIVERSI” (trans. “Everyone is different” = celebrate diversity). In the days that followed there was a fairly steady stream of visitors to Villa Rusconi (Rescalda (MI) Italy) curious to see what the exhibition was all about. It was a very rewarding experience for us to have the kids from the elementary and middle schools in Rescalda – some of the most unlikely models too I might add - pose for the photos, express their ideas about disability and pitch in to help ‘run things’ when we were not on site. The kids from the recently formed Amici Team Down Association also added their own unique style as models and took the photo message to another level. When the project was first taking form in 2009 our paths had not yet crossed with the group of families that now make up the association, and we are truly grateful for the participation of these wonderful people.

A number of classes from the elementary and middle schools in Rescalda came to see the photos and discover the message about diversity, and many visitors not only admired the photos taken by our long-time friend, photographer Enrico Mascheroni, pronouncing them touching, grand, exciting, fantastic, entertaining, but also took the time to follow the thread of thought and reflect on the way we view Down syndrome and disability in general.

The photo exhibition “Siamo tutti DIVERSI” promoting awareness regarding disability, embraces a theme that demands to be seen with new eyes, laying aside all prejudice. We are all different, and in this statement I have to see myself first. Our objective was not to show that our children with Down syndrome are the same as other children, or even show that they can do the same things. We all have different abilities. It is much easier to conclude that every individual is unique, rather than try to make them somehow fit our idea of ‘normal’.

We often judge the worth of a person on the basis of their physical appearance and when we are faced with a person with a disability we are not able to see anything other than the disability. We need to remember that the disability is only a very small part of the person. We need to see the person first!

Il secreto de Omitri

Talis pater, talis filius! Ci siamo accorti recentemente che Zacky, in un certo qual modo, sa navigare in internet e trovare i suoi siti preferiti, come ad esempio Cartoon Network, per giocare. Oggi, è andato su Google e ha scritto ‘BEN10 SECRETO DE OMITRI’. Lucio, che stava osservando divertito, ha corretto ‘omitri’ in ‘Omnitrix’ e Zacky ha trovato il film che cercava … ‘Ben10 e il Segreto dell’Omnitrix’. Ha abbracciato il papà con il solito entusiasmo dicendo: “Grazie Lucio!” ed è tornato a mettere il naso praticamente incollato al monitor per guardare finche non l’ho chiamato per aiutare con la cena.


Like father like son! We realized recently that Zacky, somehow or another, knows how to navigate the Internet and find his favourite sites, such as Cartoon Network for example, to play games. Today he went to Google, wrote ‘BEN10 SECRETO DE OMITRI’. Lucio was very amused watching the whole thing, corrected ‘omitri’ in ‘Omnitrix’ and Zacky found the film he was looking for … ‘Ben10 and the Secret of the Omnitrix’. He hugged his dad and with his usual enthusiasm said: “Grazie Lucio!” and then stuck his nose right back up against the monitor again to watch ‘til he got called to help with dinner.

Il mio animale preferito

Lasciato a fare quello che vuole, Zacky ha sempre fatto disegni molto dettagliati che sono però completamente privi di senso (almeno per me!). Se lo chiedi, lui quasi sempre dice che sono giocattoli o giochi. Ha un grande controllo motorio e i disegni possono essere veramente affascinanti, ma non hanno una forma identificabile. Adesso frequenta il 4° anno della scuola elementare e, su richiesta, a scuola produce disegni che rappresentano cose reali. Alcune settimane fa la classe stava studiando l’era paleolitica e Zacky ha portato a casa il disegno di un mammut che assomigliava a un enorme gonfiabile marrone con quelle che sembravano delle enormi zanne curve da una parte e un mucchio di gambe a forme di salsiccia posizionate tutte dall’altra. Non c’è da meravigliarsi che il povero animale si sia estinto; deve essersi stancato parecchio in quella posizione a mensola, intanto che si parava dalle frecce lanciate con allegria da un uomo primitivo sorridente. Infatti, il Mr. Homo Sapiens non sembrava affatto preoccupato dalla mancanza di un corpo, e del fatto che le sue lunghe gambe penzolanti si attaccavano da qualche parte sotto il mento!! Abbiamo riso a crepa pelle per almeno dieci minuti facendo contento Zacky che è sempre molto contento quando riesce a farci ridere.

Qualche giorno fa la maestra della 4A ha chiesto ai ragazzi di dire qual’era il loro animale preferito (animali domestici esclusi). Zacky non è affatto affezionato agli animali, neanche Guendy il coniglio di Melissa che vive nel giardino dietro casa, ma comunque mi sarei aspettata seguisse gli altri dicendo qualcosa del tipo ‘il cavallo’ o ‘l’orso’, ma no, ha invece dichiarato un’affinità per (hai indovinato!)… il mammut!! A me sembrava una scelta piuttosto furba; un’animale estinto!! Nessun pericolo di doverlo mai incontrare!

Riguardando i quaderni di Zacky oggi ho trovato il seguente tema scritto di suo pugno:

Il mio animale preferito è il mammut. È della preistoria, è grande.
Mi piace perché è gigante, è tutto marrone con le corna/zanne, ha 4 zampe.
LO VORREI TENERE IN GIARDINO.

Ma mi prendi in giro? Non ci crede nessuno!



My Favourite Animal

When left to his own devices, Zacky has always done very detailed drawings that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. If you ask him he will almost always say they are toys or games. He has great fine motor control and the drawings can be quite fascinating, but they really don’t look like anything recognizable at all. He is now in 4th grade elementary school and when prompted will produce drawings at school that represent something real. A few weeks ago they were studying the Paleolithic age at school and he brought home a drawing of a mammoth which basically looked like a huge brown balloon with something like huge curved tusks at the one end and a cluster of very improbably placed sausage-like legs at the other end. No wonder it went extinct; it must have gotten awfully tired of standing in that cantilever position while fending off all those arrows flung merrily by a smiley-faced primitive man. Mr. Homo Sapiens did not seem at all concerned at the lack of a body, and the fact that his long dangling legs were attached somewhere under the chin!! We howled laughing for about 10 minutes which Zacky thought was just great; he’s always pretty pleased when he gets a laugh!

A few days ago the kids in 4A were asked to name their favourite animal (house pets excluded). Well, Zacky is not really keen on animals at all, not even Melissa’s pet rabbit, Guendy, who lives in our backyard, but still I would have expected that he would have followed the pack and said something like ‘horse’ or ‘bear’, but no, he declared an affection for (you guessed it) … the mammoth!! I thought that was pretty smart; an extinct animal!! No danger of ever meeting up with that one!

Looking through his notebooks today I found he had written the following:

My favourite animal is the mammoth. It is from prehistory. It is big. I like it because it is gigantic. It is all brown with tusks, it has 4 legs. I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT IN THE GARDEN.
