Perché "Halfway to Gorgeousness"?

"Halfway to gorgeousness" tradotto letteralmente vuol dire "metà strada per arrivare allo splendore". Ci è capitato di guardare una sera uno show della Sig.ra Nigella, dea domestica della BBC. Inizialmente non guardavo con grande attenzione; mi sembrava la solita donna che prepara le sue ricette per la famiglia con modo di fare inoltre che trovavo irritante. Come faceva ad andare in estasi per ogni ingrediente, descrivendo con gli aggettivi più stravaganti ogni sviluppo del prodotto in preparazione? A un certo punto ha detto con un sospiro di vero trasporto (e io non credevo le mie orecchie!) “it’s halfway to gorgeousness!” Ci siamo guardati increduli e ci siamo messi a ridere per la totale assurdità dell’espressione. Però, spesso le cose più ridicole sono le cose che ti rimangono in testa, e questa espressione è entrata nel gergo della nostra famiglia, e provoca sempre una bella risata.

Quando ho chiesto un suggerimento per il nome di questo blog, mia figlia che nemmeno sapeva bene di che cosa si trattava, ha detto scherzosamente: “halfway to gorgeousness!” un nome che forse non poteva essere più azzeccato. Pensandoci bene, forse mi vedo dopo tutto nell’entusiasmo di Nigella che la spingeva ad esclamare così prima ancora di vedere la buona riuscita della sua torta o provare la sua bontà. Al mio avviso, i miei due figli, uno con la sindrome di Down e l’altra no, erano già bellissimi in partenza. Non so come sarà il prodotto finale, ma intanto sto godendo la strada che stiamo facendo insieme, e non avrei nessuna esitazione a dire di nessuno dei due che è a metà strada per arrivare a essere davvero splendido!

Why “Halfway to Gorgeousness”?

We happened to see a program one evening showing Nigella, domestic goddess of the BBC. Initially I wasn’t really watching with any great attention; it just seemed to be your average woman preparing dishes for her family in a way I found irritating. How could she truly be in ecstasy over every ingredient, describing every phase of the preparation with the most extravagant, whimsical adjectives? At a certain point in the program she said with a real sigh of rapture (and I couldn’t believe my ears!) “It’s halfway to gorgeousness!” We all looked at each other and cracked up laughing at the absolute absurdity of the expression. However, often the most ridiculous things are the ones that stick in your head, and this expression has in fact become an ‘in- joke’, and continues to tickle the funny-bone in our family.

When I asked for suggestions about a name for this blog, my daughter, who didn’t really even know what it was all about, jokingly suggested: “halfway to gorgeousness!”, a name that probably couldn’t have been more on the mark. When I thought about it, perhaps I could identify after all with the enthusiasm of Nigella that compelled her to exclaim with such obvious delight even before she saw how her cake turned out or had the chance to taste it. My two kids, one with Down syndrome and the other just plain regular variety, were both absolutely beautiful right from day one. I don’t really know how the finished product will be, but in the meantime I am enjoying the road we’re on together, and would have no hesitation in saying about either one of them that they are “halfway to gorgeousness”!
