Leaving for Friuli

Ever since school finished Zacky has been saying: “Andiamo a’ mare!” (trans. “Let’s go to sea!”) and when we finally decided to take a trip to Friuli he started to say over and over again every day “Friuli! Grado! Mare!” (Friuli is the region, and Grado is a small town by the sea in that area of Italy; mare=sea) and then “valigie, macchina, andiamo!” (trans. “suitcases, car, let’s go!”), sure that he could just pack his bags and take off right away. Every day he thought the moment had arrived and every time he was disappointed when I explained that papà still had to work a few more days, or that I still had things to get done before we could leave. When he realized that the day of departure had finally arrived last Thursday, there was no stopping him; he got together all the essential things for the trip: the Nintendo DS, “Omnitrix” (the Ben 10 ‘watch’) and his homework notebooks, i.e. every last notebook from this school year for a four-day weekend! Even though it was a particularly hot day and Zacky adores the pool, he was so excited and anxious to leave that it was difficult to convince him to go for a swim in the afternoon. Around 10 in the evening when it was almost time to leave I began to call the kids to check whether they had brushed their teeth and gone to the bathroom. But where was Zacky? I thought at first that he was out in the backyard perhaps having one last jump on the trampoline, or ‘in the garage’ (as he puts it) playing on the computer, but he wasn’t there. We called and called, shouting in a loud voice, searching in every corner of the house and yard, but no Zacky! Panic! Then a little light started to come on in my head and I looked at Melissa who was starting to smile and had obviously just had the same idea … we ran out to the car and sure enough, there we found him, sitting in his usual place with his seat belt already on! I will just add that he must have been in such a hurry to leave that he didn’t bother at all to go for a last pee! We figured this out however, when it was already too late to turn back, but he had no intention of wasting any more time and insisted that he could hold it till we got to Friuli, and so what if we had a four-hour trip in the car ahead of us!
